Dr. Sebastian Schäfer
MdB/Member of Parliament, Deutscher Bundestag
Dr. Sebastian Schäfer was born on July 11, 1979, in Dettelbach, Germany. In September 2021, he was elected to the German Bundestag for “Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen” (Alliance 90/The Greens). Schäfer served as a member of both the Budget Committee and the Finance Committee, and since February 2024, he has also been the Chair of the German-American Parliamentary Group of the Bundestag. In February 2025, Schäfer was elected to the Bundestag for a second term.
Schäfer studied economics and philosophy at the University of Erfurt, at Beloit College, and at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Erfurt.
Beginning in 2008, he worked as a political advisor to two Members of the Bundestag. In 2012, he joined the state administration of Baden-Württemberg. Among other roles, he worked at the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg to the Federal Government in Berlin and served as Chief of Staff to Cem Özdemir, the former party leader of the Greens and lead candidate in the 2017 federal election. Prior to entering the Bundestag, Schäfer was head of the Department for the Bundesrat and Federal Affairs at the Ministry of Finance of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart.
